OpenID Connect

identity layer for oauth 2.0 authentication

2026 · Daily Agent

Why learn OpenID Connect?

OpenID Connect standardizes user authentication on top of OAuth 2.0, so apps can verify who a user is (ID token), fetch basic profile claims, and avoid building custom login protocols per provider.

Where it came from

Created by the OpenID Foundation as the modern successor to OpenID 2.0. OpenID Connect Core 1.0 was finalized in 2014. It became the default web/mobile SSO choice for consumer and enterprise identity. Now considered mature/legacy in many stacks, but still heavily deployed and operationally critical.

Build your understanding

Work through these exercises in order. Try the task before opening a reference.

  1. Given a decoded ID token payload, identify issuer (iss), audience (aud), subject (sub), expiration (exp), and nonce. State whether the token should be accepted.
  2. Sketch an OIDC Authorization Code + PKCE sequence for a native app. Include where state, nonce, code_verifier, and token validation happen.
  3. You inherit an SPA using implicit flow. List concrete migration steps to Code + PKCE and explain how this changes token exposure risk.
  4. A login fails with 'invalid_audience'. Check discovery metadata, client_id usage, and ID token aud/azp logic. Propose a minimal fix plan.
  5. Choose the smallest scope set to satisfy: sign-in, display name, and email verification status. Explain tradeoffs in privacy and UX.

More ways to practice

Level 1

Read an ID token quickly

Given a decoded ID token payload, identify issuer (iss), audience (aud), subject (sub), expiration (exp), and nonce. State whether the token should be accepted.

Level 2

Design a secure mobile login

Sketch an OIDC Authorization Code + PKCE sequence for a native app. Include where state, nonce, code_verifier, and token validation happen.

Level 3

Legacy flow migration

You inherit an SPA using implicit flow. List concrete migration steps to Code + PKCE and explain how this changes token exposure risk.

Level 3

Provider interoperability debug

A login fails with 'invalid_audience'. Check discovery metadata, client_id usage, and ID token aud/azp logic. Propose a minimal fix plan.

Level 2

Claim minimization

Choose the smallest scope set to satisfy: sign-in, display name, and email verification status. Explain tradeoffs in privacy and UX.
