HTTP

the protocol every web request rides on

1991 · Tim Berners-Lee / IETF

Why learn HTTP?

Everything above (REST, APIs, browsers) is HTTP semantics. Debugging production without knowing status codes, headers, and caching is flying blind.

Where it came from

Began as a one-line GET protocol. Grew through 1.1's keep-alive, 2's multiplexing, and 3's QUIC — each version solving the last one's bottleneck.

Build your understanding

Work through these exercises in order. Try the task before opening a reference.

  1. Explain GET vs POST vs PUT vs PATCH.
  2. List 8 status codes you must know.
  3. Inspect a request fully in devtools.
  4. Explain caching headers (ETag, max-age).
  5. Describe what HTTPS adds and how TLS handshakes.
