Azure Virtual Network
Provides private Azure networks, subnets, routing, peering, and service connectivity
Why learn Azure Virtual Network?
Teams use Azure Virtual Network to adopt virtual private network without building the complete underlying platform themselves.
The problem it solves
Creates logically isolated cloud networks with subnets, routes, and security policy
Where it came from
Azure Virtual Network is Microsoft Azure's offering for virtual private network. Its closest catalog counterparts are Amazon VPC and Google Cloud VPC; they address the same broad need but are not feature-for-feature identical.
Build your understanding
Work through these exercises in order. Try the task before opening a reference.
- Explain the main responsibility of Azure Virtual Network.
- Choose a workload that fits Azure Virtual Network.
- Identify one operational tradeoff of Azure Virtual Network.
- Compare Azure Virtual Network with Amazon VPC.
- Compare Azure Virtual Network with Google Cloud VPC.

Real World Example
Secure Segmented VNet Architecture
Enterprises requiring isolated environments for multi-tier application deployments.
The business problem
Flat network architectures lead to security risks where internal application tiers are exposed to unauthorized traffic from external-facing services.
How this topic solves it
Azure Virtual Network provides the capability to create private, isolated networks with subnets that enforce granular traffic control and logical segmentation.
- Create a Virtual Network with a defined private IP address space.
- Define multiple subnets within the VNet to separate web, application, and database tiers.
- Configure Network Security Groups to restrict traffic flow between subnets based on source and destination IP, port, and protocol.
- Implement VNet Peering if connectivity between separate virtual networks is required for shared services.
- Attach resources to specific subnets to ensure they inherit the defined security and routing policies.
Traffic flow from external users through subnets.
Public facing tier
Internal logic tier
Data storage tier
- Internet → HTTPS → Web Subnet
- Web Subnet → Internal API → App Subnet
- App Subnet → SQL Query → DB Subnet
Expected business outcome
Improved security posture through reduced attack surface and controlled communication paths between application components.
Limitations and checks
VNet Peering is non-transitive; if VNet A is peered with VNet B, and VNet B is peered with VNet C, VNet A cannot communicate with VNet C unless a direct peering or gateway transit is configured. Check connectivity using the Network Watcher Next Hop tool.
